News! Legionella Risk Assessments

We're glad to announce we've added Legionella Risk Assessments to our list of services!

This year, we will be offering a comprehensive risk assessment to help satisfy ACOP L8 requirements.

What is Legionella?

Legionella is a bacterium that can cause legionnaires disease and can be found in water sources, both natural and manmade.

Is Legionaries Disease dangerous?

Legionnaires' disease is a lung infection you can get from inhaling droplets of water contaminated with the bacteria from things like air conditioning or hot tubs. It's uncommon, but it can be very serious. Around 12% of cases are fatal.

Is a legionella Risk Assessment a legal requirement?

Under UK health and safety law business owners, property managers and landlords are legally required to consider the legionella risk in their properties or businesses.

A risk assessment is the best and most effective way to achieve this.

Once completed, the assessment report should be kept up to date, reviewed periodically or when any changes are made to the water systems.

What is the legislation governing Legionella control?

In the UK the main legionella regulations are underpinned by primary health and safety laws that include:

  • The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974

  • Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999

  • Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)

The more specific code of practice applies to that the duty holder and responsible persons is:

  • Health & Safety Executive: Approved Code of Practice ACOP L8 Legionnaires’ disease. The control of legionella bacteria in water systems
